Nuance Announces 2010 eScription Million Dollar Awards

eScription Million Dollar Club Saves Healthcare Industry More Than $130M In Clinical Documentation Costs

Nuance Communications, Inc. recently, from HFMA's 2010 ANI: Healthcare Finance Conference, announced its 2010 eScription Million Dollar Award recipients. This year 22 healthcare organizations are recognized for saving one million dollars or more on medical transcription costs as a result of implementing Nuance's eScription platform for computer aided medical transcription (CAMT). To date, 36 healthcare organizations from across the U.S. have been recognized with an eScription Million Dollar Award, bringing these customers' reported, cumulative savings to more than $130M.

"eScription has enabled us to significantly improve report quality, dramatically increase transcriptionist productivity, while simultaneously reducing documentation costs by more than $3.7M," said Richard Rogers, senior vice president support services and CIO, Health First, Inc. "We produce an average of 1.3 million lines of transcription per month and across the board are meeting all target turnaround time goals. eScription has been a homerun for our organization, creating substantial cost savings and enhancing physician and MT satisfaction."

The eScription platform, an on-demand background speech recognition solution, enables healthcare organizations to achieve dramatic cost savings by helping to drive significant medical transcriptionist (MT) productivity gains (whether in-house or outsourced). With eScription, clinicians create documents in the most efficient way possible—by speaking into a phone, mobile dictation device, or electronic health record (EHR), while speech recognition technology produces highly accurate, formatted, draft documents for MTs to review and edit vs. having to transcribe from scratch. Nuance's eScription platform has received a Best in KLAS award for six years in a row, a distinction that only four other healthcare IT solutions have achieved.

This year's Million Dollar Award Recipients include:

• Eastern Connecticut Health Network (Manchester, CT), Hattiesburg Clinic (Hattiesburg, MS), and HCA North Texas (Dallas, TX) for $1M saved;

• Akron General Medical Center (Akron, OH), Tufts Medical Center (Boston, MA), University Health Associates (Morgantown, WV) and Washington County Hospital (Hagerstown, MD) for $2 million saved;

• Aurora South (Burlington, WI), Health First (Melbourne, FL), and Poudre Valley Health System (Fort Collins, CO), and Tampa General Hospital (Tampa, FL) for $3M saved;

• Carle (Urbana, IL), Intermountain Healthcare (Salt Lake City, UT), and Maine Medical Center (Portland, ME) for $5M saved;

• UNC Health Care (Chapel Hill, NC) for $6M saved;

• Gwinnett Medical Center (Lawrenceville, GA), Health Alliance (Cincinnati, OH), and UMass Memorial Health System (Worcester, MA) for $7M saved;

• Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston, MA) for $8M saved;

• Mount Carmel Health System (Columbus, OH) for $10M saved;

• Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston, MA) for $13M saved;

• Aurora Health Care Kettle Moraine/Metro Region together saved over $14M.

"In a time when healthcare IT is relied upon to drive efficiencies to lower costs and drive better, safer patient care, the eScription Million Dollar Award recipients are paving the way," said Janet Dillione, executive vice president and general manager, Nuance Healthcare. "These healthcare organizations are improving the clinical documentation process and helping to bend the cost curve for the healthcare industry as a whole. I am very pleased to honor their achievement."

The eScription platform is designed for healthcare organizations that are looking for a hosted ASP solution to shorten turnaround time, improve processes, and achieve substantial cost savings in medical transcription.
